a) When the iron rod was touching the metal contacts, it forms a closed circuit. Electricity can pass through, thus, the bulb lit up.
b) When the circuit was closed, the steel bar (being a magnetic material) was magnetised into an electromagnet. The electromagnet attracted the iron rod, thus, the iron rod moved towards the steel bar.
