This is an incorrect approach. The question did not specify if the units for R and for T are the same but you have assumed it

Secondly, the area of S is 8/9 the area of R+T, not 8 times.

Edit : a third error was, the question was not asking for shaded area as a fraction of the unshaded fraction area.

ratio of S to R+T = 8 : 9

¼ of S is shaded, so number of units of S that is shaded
= 8 ÷ 4 = 2

(Or 8 x ¼ = 2)

Area of whole figure

= Area of S + Area of R + Area of T - Area of overlap(shaded area)

= 8 units + 9 units - 2 units
= 15 units

Fraction of figure that is shaded
= 2/15
