My personal strategy for such equations is to clear the equations of all fractions first.

In your expression, for the first fraction, the '5' goes into the denominator
This becomes 3(3y + 12) divided by (5y).
For the second fraction, the '(2y)' is divided by the entire chunk, so the '5' goes into the numerator to become
10y divided by (3y + 12)
This becomes 3(3y + 12) divided by (5y).
For the second fraction, the '(2y)' is divided by the entire chunk, so the '5' goes into the numerator to become
10y divided by (3y + 12)
