I thought the question stated equal number of brand X and brand Y. With your method, aren't you implying different number of X and Y since you used different alphabets for the respective brands? Although in the end you did equate X and Y, I am doubtful whether algebra is suitable for a P6 level. I may be wrong. Thanks
Thanks for your comment. I believe primary 6 already starting to learn algebra. It is a good practice to learn algebra as they can solve many questions. Moreover i already stated in the end that x=y. I put them in different alphabet so as to not confuse the student. If not, it will be very messy.
I see. It's a good intention but I am not sure whether it's a valid method in the context for primary school student. They do learn basic algebra and simple simultaneous equation. However, the method you are presenting appears more relevant to a sec 1 context. I may be wrong.
Sure no problem. We are here to help the student anyway. Whichever method, as long as the student understand, it will be great. I am here just to do some math to past time and work my brain in the morning. Haha.
Thanks! That's true joy of learning.

This is an alternative method. You may continue from where I left off. Hope it helps. Thanks

So if 18sets of 12 for Brand X and
18sets of 12 for Brand Y then is it
12x18 = 216 for Brand X
12x18 = 216 for Brand Y
Total is 216x2 = 432?

Yup. You are correct.
Got it. Thank you! :)
