The graph in part a is typical of a power -1 graph. Normally a graph of 1/x will have the horizontal "untouchable" line at y = 0. In this case, the "untouchable" line is at y = 1. So, there is an additional "+1" at the end of the equation.

y = 1/x + 1

So, b = 1, n = -1 (actually, a can be any negative odd integer)

The graph in part b is typical of a power 3 graph. The factor to add here is a +"1".

So, b = 1, n = 3.

For the third one, I skip the steps, b = -2, n = 2.

O Level students only learn powers -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 and 3.

They do not learn power -3, so for part a, n = -1 is more appropriate.

Anyway you will need to explain the term "asymptote" to the student, as the vast majority of E Maths students do not learn the term "asymptote".
