Non-algebra method :

Mrs Wang : 7 times as many men as women

Women she shook hands with : 1 unit (this doesn't include herself)

Total men (she shook hands with all the men): 7 units

Mr Wang : 6 times as many men as women

Total women : 1 unit + 1 (must include Mrs Wang)

Men he shook hands with : 6 x (1unit + 1)
= 6 units + 6

Total men = 6 units + 6 + 1 (adding himself)
= 6units + 7

So 6 units + 7 = 7 units since number of men is not changed.

1 unit = 7

Total number of women = 7 + 1 = 8
Total number of men = 7 x 7 = 49

See 1 Answer

Let the number of men be x and the number of women be y

(x-1) = 6y
x = 6y+1 — eqn (1)
x = 7(y-1) — eqn (2)

6y+1 = 7y-7
y = 8
x = 49
