1 - 1/3 = 2/3
2/3 are apples.

Number of apples = 72 x 2/3 = 48

⅜ of apples are green.

Green apples = ⅜ x 48 = 18

Welcome. Actually the concept behind your working is correct. Just that you should look at the fraction that are apples instead of pears.

Here's how it should be :

1 - ⅓ = ⅔

⅔ = 8/12

12 units = 72
1 unit = 72 ÷ 12 = 6

Green apples = 3 units
= 3 x 6
= 18

Question 2 is essentially the same as question 1.

1 - ⅓ = ⅔
⅔ of the fruits are apples.

⅔ x 72 = 48
There are 48 apples.

Fraction of apples that are green
= 18/48
= 3/8

Alternative working :

Fraction of all fruits that are green apples
= 18/72
= ¼

Fraction of all fruits that are apples
= 1 - ⅓ = ⅔

Fraction of apples that are green

= fraction of all fruits that are green apples/fraction of all fruits that are apples

= ¼ ÷ ⅔

= ¼ x 3/2

= 3/8

This method utilises division of fractions. Although this has been removed from the syllabus, it's worth to learn it and might come in useful in PSLE.

So originally there are 3 units (total) of fruits. 2 of these units is equivalent to 8 units (represent all apples).
Hence you can see that the original 2 units can actually be cut into 8 units.. by simply x4.

Hence 3 original units can be cut into a total of 12 units.

And hence the subsequent steps to find the number of green apples
