Please help with workings. Thanks
so we can try from denominator 12 first.
Multiply both denominator and numerator by 6,
1/2 = 6/12
But 2/5 cannot be multiplied to denominator 12.
So we find the common multiple of 5 and 12 to compare.
Since 5 x 12 = 60,
6/12 = 30/60
2/5 = 24/60
Remember that we need to simplify the fraction to denominator 12. So we need a numerator bigger than 24 , but smaller than 30. And it must be divisible by 5 so the fraction's denominator can be simplified to 12.
We can choose 25.
25/60 = 5/12
2/5 and 1/2 cannot get to 11. So we need to find the common multiple of 2,5 and 11.
2 x 5 x 11 = 110
So 2/5 = 44/110
1/2 = 55/110
Remember that we need to simplify the fraction to denominator 11. So we need a numerator bigger than 44 , but smaller than 55. And it must be divisible by 10 so the fraction's denominator can be simplified to 11.
We can choose 50.
50/110 = 5/11
2/5 = 4/10
For denominator 10, there is no whole number between 4 and 5. So we cannot use denominator 10.
If we use denominator 9,
We need to find a common multiple for 2,5 and 9. We can use 2 x 5 x 9 = 90
2/5 = 36/90
1/2 = 45/90
Remember that we need to simplify the fraction to denominator 9 . So we need a numerator bigger than 36 , but smaller than 45 And it must be divisible by 10 so the fraction's denominator can be simplified to 9.
We can choose 40.
40/90 = 4/9
See 1 Answer
For more than 4/10, the fraction should have smaller denominator. So is 4/9
For less than 5/10. The denominator should be bigger, so 5/11.
Think this is working. Else pupil can finish their exam paper during PSLE.
Your working really good! Well explanation!
