In the second last step before the (proved), O think the first two brackets are missing the power ⅓

You can also do the second part like this:

a³ + 3a - 4 = 0
Sub a = 1,
1³+ 3(1) - 4 = 1 + 3 - 4 = 0

By the factor theorem, a - 1 is a factor of the polynomial.

Factorise,

(a-1)(a²+a+4) = 0
You will be able to obtain the second bracket by some trial and error once you know (a-1) is a factor.
