Every $40 → $32
Every $40 → $32
Every $40 → $32
Total before discount for $120 → $96
$116-$96 = $22 (cost without discount)
Therefore, $120 + $22 = $142

Each “group” is $32 with the discount.

We need to build up such “groups” until a value of $118.

118/32 = 3 R 22

So, there must have been 3 complete groups and a further $22 in cost.

Each “group” is $40 before the discount.

$120 is obtained by multiplying the 3 groups with the $40 figure.

Add $22 to this and we get the $142 bill.
