Let the initial number of girls and boys be x and y respectively.

x = y + 40 — (1)

3/5x = 2/3y + 18
9/5x = 2y + 54
9x = 10y + 270 — (2)

Since x = y + 40,

9(y + 40) = 10y + 270
9y + 360 = 10y + 270
10y - 9y = 360 - 270
y = 90

x = y + 40
x = 90 + 40
x = 130

Total number of girls and boys = x + y = 130 + 90 = 220
