Summary
hello! my name is gwyneth and i am a year 3 psychology student in ngee ann polytechnic. i prefer teaching primary school/lower secondary and subjects like english, math & chinese. for science, i would prefer to stick to just primary school students.
i've been teaching tuition for the ~1 year to my relatives' children. focusing on mathematics, chinese and english for primary school and amath, emaths, english & chinese (lower sec). additionally, for my internship, i was a cognitive development trainer at a "tuition" centre, where i worked with students to improve their cognitive abilities (memory, processing, spatial perspectives, etc.) such that they could use these skills in school. even though, my internship does not focus on subjects (we focus on cognitive ability),i believe that with my knowledge on the relevance between cognitive abilities and school subject, i could better analyse the difficulties the student face and assist him/her in developing the relevant skills they need to excel in the subject. (more about cognitive abilities later!)
my style of teaching is to cater to the needs of the student. for example, for the first few lessons, i would go through and analyse student's school work and past examinations to identify the common mistakes made on a topic/area in which they are weaker at. throughout the first few weeks, i would also analyse the needs of the student based on their area of weakness & cognitive ability. for example, if they are weak in comprehension, it might be because they lack the skill of reading fluency & pace or information processing. or for math, those who are weak in geometry might not have adequate spatial perspective skill. *every child lacks in an area(s), it is not necessarily "bad". it can be developed over time & practice. ◡̈*
but, of course, i won't focus on solely the weakness of the child. i would also focus on their strength to help them become an all rounder in the subject. i would do it in a 7:3 ratio and adjust accordingly to ensure the student reach their maximum potential.
lastly, i would also provide students with fun, informative & short worksheet (BASED ON CHILD'S NEEDS) that i've created on my own to allow them to get adequate practice. Some examples:
- Cognitive Skills: Vary accordingly to skill
- English: Vocabulary/Grammar Enhancer, Informative Summary to promote reading & comprehension*
- Science: Fill in the blanks Topical Revision
- Math: Additional Topical Problem Sums, Advanced Problem Sums
*My ideas for Informative Summary:
P1-2: more general knowledge
P3-4: Mix of general knowledge & Local news
P5-6: Local & World News/Culture
Sec1-2: Mix of News, Tech, Culture, etc.
All levels may also include topics children like.
Note: Worksheets do not equal to assessment books/10 yr series/Past year paper. It is an additional resource. Not given weekly/monthly, but only if child need.
