Sorry, but triangles BDE & ADE are NOT similar, hence it is incorrect.

Both BDE & ADE share a common height (let's call it "h") from point E. Therefore, using 0.5(base)(height) for area of triangle:

BDE/ADE = 0.5(BD)(h)/0.5(AD)(h)
BDE/24 = BD/AD = 2/1
So, BDE = 2(24) = 48 cm^2
