Difference in total number of marbles when each boy has 10 marbles, compared to having 9 marbles each
= Excess + shortage
= 4 + 3 = 7
Difference in number of marbles per boy (9 compared to 10) = 10 - 9 = 1
Number of boys there are = difference in total ÷ difference per boy
= 7 ÷ 1 = 7
Number of marbles in the bag
= Number of boys × 9 marbles each + excess
= 7 × 9 + 4 = 63 + 4 = 67
OR
Number of marbles in the bag
= Number of boys × 10 marbles each - shortage
= 7 × 10 - 3 = 70 - 3 = 67
= Excess + shortage
= 4 + 3 = 7
