Since the question states that the roots differ by 3, my roots can either be x=a (smaller) and x=a+3 (bigger) or x=a-3 (smaller) and x=a (bigger).
However if i use x=a-3 and x=a, both of my roots will not be negative. Since the question wants negative roots, i cannot use x=a-3 and x=a, i will need to use x=a and x=a+3 instead.
