I could understand till the working until 1unit = 12.
But isn’t it they are finding the difference?
Why can’t we use total 18units minus 6units and then multiply by 12 to find the difference.
Pardon me for not being able to understand.
Awaiting for your reply. Thank you.

18 units = 8 units + 120
Difference in number of units is 10 units which balance up to 120 with the 8 units.

So, 10 units is equal to 120
Therefore, 1 unit = 12.

Sorry again...
Your 8units + 120 means (8necklaces + 120beads)? and your 6 units refers to (6 bracelets)?
Therefore Jess has 3times more beads than Valerie means Jess has (6units x 3 = 18units)?

18 units is equivalent to 8units + 120?

Apologise for asking so much.

One more question.
When we know 1unit = 12, isn’t we are suppose to substitute in?

Jess (8units + 120) - Valerie (6 units)
= 216 - 72
= 144 (difference)?

Sorry. I did not read the question carefully.
Yes, the difference is 216 - 72 = 144.

Answer: 144
