Let pens be P, notebooks be N.

6P + 3N = 45 -- equation 1

Since Notebook costs $9 more than pen,
N= P + 9 -- equation 2

Substitute equation 2 into equation 1,
6P + 3(P + 9) = 45
6P + 3P + 27 = 45
9P = 27
P = 2


Therefore, the price of a pen is $2.
