Note that ions are formed when an atom has gained or loss electrons. Each sodium atom lose one electron to form the sodium ion, Na+. Each chlorine atom gain 1 electron to form the chloride ion, Cl-. NaCl is incorrectly referred to as a molecule. It is an ionic compound. Thus, there are no atoms in the crystal structure, only ions.
