Grey squares are in multiples of 3. Hence it's 1x3, 2x3, 3x3 etc (Fig No x3).
Total squares are product of consecutive numbers. In Fig 1, total is 6=2x3, so the term is (Fig No+1) x (Fig No+2).
White= Total - Grey.

I dont understand the brackets
Brackets are the formula to derive the answers. So that means,
A) 5x3=15 (Fig No x3)
B) 9x10=90
