For such questions, we are often given that 2 functions are (i) tangent to each other or (ii) intersect at 2 distinct points, or (iii) do not intersect(no real roots). Respectively, they mean that the discriminant (b²-4ac) is (i) =0, (ii) >0, and (iii) <0. Very important!
