Pardon the drawing! For (a) the length should be 22 and not 24 like what you have labeled as there is an overlap between the centre square and the square on the top right corner.
For (b), I separated the shaded areas into A and B. Area B is just taking area A and subtracting the area of the two squares shaded in red. After that the total shaded area would be 2 of area A added with 2 of area B. Hope this was of help!

From there to find unshaded, just subtract total area of ABCD with shaded area.
