For this question, comparing the first two ratios given I can draw a model to see how many units are taken away when Darren or muthu pays for the gift.

By comparing I can see that when I take away 8 units I can fit the ratios given so the cost of the gift would be 8 units and from there we can solve the question.

If you wish to double check this you can draw 11 squares to represent Hafiz and then take away 8 units. He will be left with 3 units and the ratio from the model will be 12:9:3 which simplifies to 4:3:1 as given in the question. Hope this helps!
