The area of the big square = 8 x 8 = 64 cm^2.
The area of the big square is twice the area of the medium square, and the area of medium square is twice the area of the small square (you can break them up into triangles to see).

Area of the medium square = 64 divide by 2 = 32 cm^2.

Area of the small square = 32 divide by 2 = 16cm^2.
