Sonia, I made a mistake earlier in my writing. I update it here.
At the boundary condition a = 0, the equation for y transposes to
y = 5 / (2 - x)
which is another curve with no stationary points.
As such, we reject these boundary cases and therefore a < -5/4 or a > 0.
