Very common mistake not to factor in whether k has to be positive or negative. Always look out for the coefficient of x^2 and how it has to be to fit the conditions required.

A rule of thumb I tell my students is this
“...if you see a “k” in the coefficient of x^2 (or y^2 if the equation is in y), you must be careful)...”
In fact, we must also be careful on one other thing. We must also not allow the coefficient of x^2 to become zero, since this would make the equation a straight line graph which (in most cases) cuts the x-axis exactly once.
