In positive (+ve) and negative(-ve) value... for additional and subtraction
-ve can be explained as owe money
+ve can be explained as pay money
So here, owe 6 dollars then owe 12 dollars again, total owe 18 dollars.
Same for other like -6 + 8
owe 6 dollars, pay 8 dollars, extra +2 dollars.
