Alternative method :

Since May spends $18 and John spends $24 a day,

$24 - $18 = $6

John spends $6 more a day than May.
So the difference between their amount of money increases by $6 each day.

Difference in their money in the end
is 4 times. Since May has 5 times as much as John, she has 4 times more than John.

= $15 x 4
= $60

Number of days spent to reach the difference of $60
= $60 ÷ $6
= 10

At first, May has 10 x $18 + $15 x 5
= $255
