43 needs to be written as 4.3. We do that by dividing by 10 (move the decimal point one space to the left).

I usually tell my students to remember: reduce by one space for the number, increase by one for the power. Conversely, when we increase by one space for the number (move one decimal place to the right), we decrease the power by one.
