Using total unchanged concept, you can work out the numbers in each situation.

In the End:
3 units = 240
1 unit = 240/3 = 80
X has 160 and Y has 80

Then:
Y took back 80, X left with 80 which is 2/5 of the number at first in X.
Therefore, 1/5 --> 80/2 = 40
5/5 --> 5 x 40 = 200
X has 200 at first and Y has 40.
