Use model drawing to understand the question better. The clue to this question is the remaining 4 units, which make up half of the original number. So total units should be 8. Therefore, the 285 beads used to make the necklace will be 3 units.

The 4 units are the number of beads left, which is half of what you have at first. So at first you should have 8 units.
