Approach the question by reversing what he spend on

Remaining:$33
Since he spent half of his remaining money on t shirt and was left with $33, the t shirt must cost $33.

Amount before buying T shirt= $33+$33=$66

He spent 25% of what he originally have on a backpack before buying the t shirt.
Percentage amount of money he have left before buying T shirt = 100%-25%=75%

$66=75%
Original amount he have=$66×100%/75%=$88
