The bridge is made out of steel. Hence during the day, when the steel is exposed the heat, the steel expands.
If both sides were fixed, the metal will continue to expand. If both sides were fixed, the bridge will bend upwards in the center as the metal cannot expand side ways.
It will move towards B as when the metal expands, it expands toward B as the left side of the bridge is fixed. Thus the follower moves in the direction of B.
