Let the cost of tie be N.
Since shirt is 5x the cost of a tie, it is 5N.

5N-N=4N

Since the difference between cost of shirt and tie is $36

4N=$36

N=$9

Since he bought a tie and a shirt,

N+5N= 6N

And since 1N = $9
6N = $54
