Good evening Shoshanna! Here are my workings for this question.

If you notice carefully, the area of triangle ADE is made of one triangle ABE and one triangle BDE.

The area of triangle CDE is made of one triangle CBD and one triangle BDE.

Altogether, their total area is made of one triangle ABE, one triangle CBD and two triangles BDE.

In contrast, the entire shape ABCDE is made of one triangle ABE, one triangle CBD and one triangle BDE. If you notice carefully, this is exactly one triangle BDE fewer than the previous sum mentioned.

Hence, the difference in the two values above gives the area of one triangle BDE.
