It’s a bit difficult to explain why it’s “3 x $0.80” but here’s another method.
1 pen → 1 unit
3 pens → 3 units
1 notebook → 1 unit + $0.80
2 notebooks → 2 units + $1.60
3 pens = 2 notebooks
3 units = 2 units + $1.60
1 unit → $1.60
1 notebook: $1.60 + $0.80 = $2.40
1 pen → 1 unit
3 pens → 3 units
1 notebook → 1 unit + $0.80
2 notebooks → 2 units + $1.60
