Initially A and B has equal amount of students, both at 1 unit each.
After 16 students left from A to join B, A becomes 1 unit while B becomes 3 units (B has 3 times as much as A).
1 unit = 16
4 units = 16 x 4
= 64
Initially both has equal amount,
64 / 2 = 32 students each.
