Each circle pass through the centre of 2 other circles, so for every pair of circles we can draw a line of symmetry (blue lines).
Not sure how to explain the pink lines (tell me if you know why), but now you can see all the circles are divided into 6 equal segments.
Rearrange the shaded areas should give 3 shaded segments. Shaded area = 3/6 = 1/2 the area of a circle = 1/2π(2)^2 = 2π cm^2

The pink lines are actually the symmetry lines obtained when one draws more identical overlapping circles
