The rule of thumb is that when you have a product which is difficult to simplify (like x times sin x which we cannot simplify further and hence has to be left as the product of two terms), we use the product rule. If product is easy to multiply, as is the case in Q1a, we can just multiply in the terms before doing basic differentiation.
