a) ‘Sea level’ is a reference point, usually ground level. In this case, the bottom of the hill is below sea level.

b) ascent = plane goes up
descent = plane goes down

Initially, plane is 18000m above the ground (altitude). It then goes up by 4000m. The new altitude is 18000m+4000m. Then it goes down by 3500m, so you subtract 3500m to get the final altitude.

Essentially it is just 18000+500
