May I ask how do you know 3 parts represent $228?
Brian have 228 more than JM.
Let the Brian total money at 1st = 12u + 228.
Due to Brian spent 1/3 of his money.
1/3 of 12u
= 1/3 x12u
= 4u
and 1/3 of 228
=228 x1/3
= 76,
Brian let with 8u + 152
