You can use a computer to sketch the cubic graph out. You will see that from 0 to 8, there is a section in which the graph is below the horizontal axis.

Remember that areas below the horizontal axis will have a negative integral value (this is a property of areas which lie below the x-axis) and this negative value will cancel out the positive values above the x-axis and not add to the overall value.

This is the reason why we have to check for any possible such situations.
