Hi Chelsia! These techniques are important in the solving of such questions.

1. Basic expansion of algebraic terms
2. Factorising out common terms
3. Combining into a single fraction
4. Completing the square

In (e), you will need the technique of completing the square to obtain the sum of roots.

a2 + b2
= a2 + 2ab + b2 - 2ab
= (a + b)2 - 2ab

and you are able to conveniently substitute the values of a + b and ab into the expression.
