How questions are framed impacts the depth of reflection when answering a question. Let’s not make assumptions when there is a real solution in sight.

Yea but in P6 they have not learnt Pythagoras' Theorem. So the only way to solve it is to assume so, especially if such a situation appears in exams.


Otherwise, the question has to be reworked. The diagram is the one that needs to be redrawn since the circles are beside each other anyway. Redrawing such that there is no overlap and the distance between centres is 8.5cm


I can see your point providing the real solution but even then you'll have to show the working regarding Pythagoras' Theoem so the students will know how it comes about , rather than just stating 8.3666cm which might confuse them

Noted. I will give full marks to a student who acknowledges that he is missing the skill and probably half a mark to student who forces an answer out of a question for his proactive judgment. Zero mark to the one who set this question as he/she utterly lacks understanding of the topic and skills required at P6 level.
