The vector projection of 3a - b onto a - 3b is the one I labelled in red on the left hand side.

But the length of that projection is a scalar (length is a scalar, independent of the direction). So using the scalar projection formula is sufficient for this question.

I mean the one I labelled in red without the arrow. The one which I wrote 'length of projection'.

Also, cos 60 = half.
