In algebra, you are just using the letters as numbers, so any operations that work on numbers work on the letters as well.
For instance, 1 + 1 = 2. If you let a = 1, b= 1 and c=2:
a + b = c.
For instance, 1 + 1 = 2. If you let a = 1, b= 1 and c=2:
a + b = c.
