Let's say a tangent is drawn from a circle with centre O and cuts the circle at A. Then OA (the radius) is perpendicular to the tangent at A.

"Chord" is just any line formed by joining any two points along the circumference of the circle. "Diameter" is the longest possible chord in a circle.

Circles is one of the more difficult topics in E Maths and A Maths. Pattern recognition is extremely important in this chapter. It’s a matter of noticing the relevant angles and the relevant rules to use.

There are a few rules to learn, such as

- angles in the same segment are equal
- angles in a semicircle is 90
- angle at centre is twice angle at circumference
- opposite angles of a cyclic quad add to 180
And so on.

Lots and lots to practise on for this topic. Sometimes I myself do take some time to solve a question because I could not find the relevant angles...
