Let u = numerator and v = denominator, so that y = u/v.
dy/dx equals
[v du/dx - u dv/dx] whole thing divided by v2.
If we call numerator 'first' and denominator 'second', then the formula for dy/dx reads
"Keep second differentiate first - Keep first differentiate second, then whole thing divided by second square".
