I don't really understand
Which part did you not understand?
As we don’t know their age, hence we use x and y as a representation of their age.
Given that Joshua is 8 years younger than Elhenne, hence the age of elhenne ,y, substract Joshua’s age ,x, will give you 8.
Furthermore, the question say that after 4 years, the sum of their age will be 50.
So, x + 4 + y + 4 = 50.
Now we can solve the algebra and hence get x (Joshua’s age) = 17 and elhenne’s age = 17 +8 = 25 years old
