Oxygen and carbon dioxide gas are two major gases that play a part in gaseous exchange in living things on Earth. Plants and other autotrophs take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and give out oxygen as the byproduct. All organisms take in oxygen for respiration and give out carbon dioxide as the byproduct too.
