i hope u understand how the question works.
1. The pavement lose heat to the cold wind and contracted
2. At the same time, inner side of the pavement gains heat from warm soil and expanded.
Since both contraction and expansion happened at the same time, there will be uneven contraction/expansion ( you can write either uneven contraction or expansion) resulting in a crack.
* I’m also a P6 student. Not sure whether if this correct but it’s smth got to do with expansion and contraction.
